Quick, what comes to mind when you hear words like “environmentally friendly” and “responsible” or “sustainable”?

Recycling. Carbon Footprint. Medical Equipment.

Medical Equipment??? Yes!

Today, more and more facilities in the healthcare sector are pledging to adopt and implement comprehensive sustainability initiatives.

Purchasing “sustainable” medical equipment is one of many ways healthcare facilities are doing their part to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) and carbon footprints.

Sounds easy but short of painting all sustainably manufactured medical equipment green how does one know what is environmentally friendly and what is not?

Most manufacturers who have invested in sustainable manufacturing practices are eager to share that news. A little bit of research on manufacturer websites will reveal their sustainability certifications, policies, and practices.

Throughout history there have been women who have advocated for, inspired, and mentored other women.

Some of these women have made the history books.

Others with equally powerful voices have remained anonymous.

It is safe to say that the pandemic rocked our world.

It brought words like “sterilize” and “sterilization” out of the world of healthcare and into mainstream conversation.

Healthcare facilities, from large IDNs to small private practices doubled down on sterilization practices.

Today, three years later, the sterilization equipment market is still growing.

Because healthcare associated infections (HAI) are most common in surgical patients or patients receiving long-term care, medical sterilization equipment is a key player in the battle to combat the spread of HAIs.

Sterilization equipment is also a vital weapon in the struggle to keep healthcare workers safe.

Projections suggest that the sterilization equipment market will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.4% over the next ten years!

It depends on who you ask.

Ask four members of a surgical team what is important in a surgical light, and you will probably get four different answers.

In the operating room the roles and duties of each member of a surgical team define important lighting features. Whether in an Ambulatory Surgical Center, Hospital, or Clinic, for every role there are unique lighting requirements and pain points.

Ask Equipment Planners, Facility Managers, or Biomedical Engineers and they will tell you that technology, installation, and maintenance support are most important. 

So many different answers.

Why is that?

It comes down to the focus of the stakeholders.
