Equipping your laboratory with the right lab equipment can make a noticeable difference in turnaround time. Equipment with the appropriate capacity, throughput, automation capability, reliability, and functionality can help increase efficiency at several points between specimen receipt and result reporting.

Improving turnaround time starts with identifying which equipment is contributing to the delays your laboratory is experiencing.

A centrifuge may not have enough capacity for peak volume.

A specimen transport system may not move samples to the laboratory frequently enough. An analyzer may require too many manual interventions.

Equipment downtime can bring testing to a stop altogether.

Looking at the equipment behind those delays can help laboratories make more informed purchasing decisions.

This post looks at where lab equipment can influence turnaround time, from preparing specimens for testing through analysis and the equipment that supports those processes. We’ll also look at the characteristics that matter when comparing equipment and how to recognize when the equipment itself may be contributing to a delay.

Let’s get started.

## Match the Equipment to the Bottleneck You Actually Have

Contrary to popular assumptions, buying the fastest equipment available does not automatically improve turnaround time or increase throughput.

A better plan is to first identify where equipment is contributing to the turnaround delays. For example:

- If specimens routinely wait for centrifugation during peak periods, examine centrifuge capacity.
- If samples accumulate before analysis, compare analyzer throughput with peak testing demand rather than relying only on daily averages.
- If staff repeatedly interrupt testing to replenish reagents or consumables, look at analyzer capacity and loading requirements.
- If testing stops too often because of equipment outages, reliability, service history, lifecycle status, or backup capacity may deserve attention.
- If specimens cannot be processed immediately because storage capacity is routinely strained, refrigeration requirements may need another look.

This approach helps solve a turnaround problem at its source.

You are no longer asking which equipment is "better" in general. You are asking which equipment is best suited to address the bottleneck(s) your laboratory is experiencing.

Also keep in mind, more equipment is not always the answer. Better-matched equipment often is.

So, before signing off on that purchase order for more or faster lab equipment, consider the answers to these questions:

- Can the equipment maintain the required performance during peak testing periods?
- How much hands-on staff intervention does it require?
- Can specimens be added continuously?
- Does processing require batches to finish before additional specimens can be loaded?
- How often will reagents or consumables require replenishment?
- What preventive maintenance is required?
- How often is the equipment expected to be unavailable for planned maintenance?
- What happens to testing when the equipment is unavailable unexpectedly?
- Can the equipment integrate with existing laboratory information and automation systems?
- How readily are service and replacement parts available?
- Does the equipment have enough capacity to accommodate anticipated volume growth?

These questions can be applied to several points in the laboratory process, beginning with the transportation, preparation, and storage of specimens for testing.

## Equipment That Can Influence Pre-Analytical Turnaround

Several types of equipment can affect how quickly specimens become ready for testing.

| **Equipment** | **Potential influence on turnaround time** | **What to evaluate** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Clinical centrifuges | Can prevent queues before analysis when capacity matches specimen volume | Capacity, cycle options, tube compatibility, rotor design, peak volume |
| STAT centrifuges | Can support prioritized processing of appropriate urgent specimens | Validated protocols, capacity, tube compatibility, intended workload |
| Specimen transport systems | Can reduce delays between collection and laboratory receipt | Transport capacity, frequency, specimen requirements, reliability |
| Refrigerators | Support specimens that cannot move immediately to processing or testing | Usable capacity, temperature performance, monitoring, alarms |
| Freezers | Support specimens requiring frozen storage or longer retention | Recovery performance, capacity, alarms, backup planning |
| Temperature monitoring systems | Can identify storage excursions that may interrupt specimen processing | Alert configuration, connectivity, documentation, escalation procedures |

Equipment selection should remain consistent with laboratory procedures, specimen requirements, manufacturer instructions, and applicable regulatory standards.

One area of pre-analytical equipment deserves a closer look. Cold storage may sit quietly in the background of laboratory operations, but inadequate capacity, temperature excursions, or equipment failure can delay processing or affect specimen integrity.

## Cold Storage Can Prevent Another Source of Delay

Refrigerators and freezers do not usually come to mind when people talk about turnaround time. That does not make them irrelevant.

Some specimens must remain under specific conditions while they await processing, additional testing, referral, or retention. Cold-storage equipment must have features that support that demand consistently.

Capacity is one feature consideration. A refrigerator that routinely operates near its usable limit may struggle to accommodate additional specimens during high-volume periods.

Temperature stability and recovery performance also matter. A temperature excursion can require a time-consuming investigation before affected specimens can be processed or tested.

Equipment failure can create an even larger interruption.

A refrigerator packed like a suitcase five minutes before airport check-in is probably trying to tell you something.

When evaluating cold storage, consider:

- usable capacity,
- temperature performance,
- monitoring and alarm capabilities,
- recovery characteristics,
- reliability, and
- anticipated specimen volume.

Once specimens have been transported, prepared, and stored appropriately, the focus shifts to the equipment performing the testing. At that point, analyzer performance becomes a much bigger part of the turnaround-time equation.

## Analyzer Speed Is Only Part of Analyzer Performance

Since analytical equipment plays a central role in turnaround time, the important question is whether the analyzer fits the laboratory's workload and testing model.

A laboratory processing high test volumes may need equipment capable of maintaining performance during its busiest periods rather than equipment sized around an average hourly volume.

Average volume can hide trouble.

A system may process 600 specimens during a day without difficulty. If a large percentage arrives between 6:00 and 10:00 a.m., peak capacity becomes far more relevant than the daily total.

While throughput can influence turnaround time, it is only one part of analyzer performance.

Let’s look at other aspects of analyzer performance that can affect turnaround time, positively or negatively.

### Analyzer Characteristics That Can Influence Turnaround Time

| **Analyzer characteristic** | **Potential influence on turnaround time** | **What to evaluate** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Throughput** | Helps determine whether equipment can manage routine and peak testing volume | Tests per hour, peak demand, assay mix |
| **Time to first result** | Can matter when certain assays are time-sensitive | Assay timing, clinical priorities, testing model |
| **Continuous loading** | May allow specimens to be added without waiting for a batch to finish | Loading method, batch requirements, specimen volume |
| **STAT handling** | Can support prioritized urgent testing within established laboratory procedures | STAT capabilities, workflow rules, assay availability |
| **Reagent capacity** | Can reduce interruptions caused by frequent replenishment | Onboard reagent capacity, refill frequency, test volume |
| **Automation compatibility** | Can reduce manual specimen handling where automated systems are appropriate | Interface requirements, track compatibility, future automation plans |
| **Connectivity** | Can reduce manual data-entry and result-transfer steps | LIS compatibility, interface requirements, data exchange |
| **Maintenance requirements** | Influence how often equipment may be unavailable for planned servicing | Maintenance frequency, service duration, support availability |

It is best practice to evaluate these characteristics together before purchasing lab equipment used for analysis.

A high-throughput analyzer with frequent manual interventions may create a different operating pattern from equipment with slightly lower maximum throughput but fewer interruptions.

The analyzer claiming the fastest specifications does not automatically produce the fastest laboratory throughput.

Specifications only matter when the equipment is available to do the work. Even an analyzer that is well matched to testing volume can become a turnaround-time problem when downtime interrupts the workflow.

## Reliability Has a Direct Relationship with Turnaround

A laboratory can design an efficient workflow on paper and lose it quickly when a key piece of equipment becomes unavailable.

Equipment reliability therefore belongs in turnaround-time conversations.

At the risk of stating the obvious, equipment downtime can create several consequences:

- Specimens may need to be moved to other equipment.
- Testing may be delayed until equipment returns to service.
- Staff may need to switch to backup procedures.
- Samples may require referral to another laboratory.
- Work can accumulate and create a queue after service resumes.

Downtime is a particularly important consideration when equipment supports what could be considered a single point of failure.

While a smaller laboratory may not have duplicate equipment for every function, larger facilities may determine that redundancy is justified for selected processes where downtime would create unacceptable disruption.

Backup capacity does not always have to mean placing duplicate equipment in every laboratory. Health systems with multiple locations can also look at how equipment choices across their network affect their ability to shift work, support staff, or respond when a system is unexpectedly unavailable. That brings another equipment strategy into the turnaround-time conversation: selective standardization.

## Selective Standardization Can Reduce Equipment-Related Disruptions

Health systems operating multiple laboratories have another factor to consider. Standardization.

It is no secret that different labs within the same healthcare network may use different centrifuges, analyzers, storage equipment, and accessories. Some variation is unavoidable.

However, unnecessary variation can create equipment-related complications.

Using common equipment families where appropriate may simplify staff training. It can also make backup planning easier when equipment becomes unavailable. Familiar controls, accessories, and maintenance requirements may reduce the adjustment required when staff work at more than one location.

Keep in mind that standardization should not mean forcing every network laboratory into an identical configuration.

Instead, health systems should identify equipment categories where standardization makes sense. Individual labs can still choose different equipment when volume, test menu, or other clinical requirements justify the difference.

Whether you are evaluating one piece of equipment or equipment choices across multiple laboratories, the same principle applies: the right choice depends on how the equipment fits the workload and workflow it needs to support.
